Make sure you have a  stage setting.  You want a place where people will feel like they are on a stage.  This makes it more American idol like.  But, you don’t want things too cramped.  You want to leave enough room for the people singing so they can get into it a little if they want to.

Have everyone fill out a small piece of paper with their names.  Then you can draw them from a hat or by some other means.  Then just pick names as the night goes on.  Or have a list they can sign up on.

You will want a decent sound system.  You can rent one from karaoke places around town.  You don’t have to spend a small fortune but you do want to have something that is loud enough so everyone can hear the singer clearly.
